What happens in your free trial lesson

A trial lesson is a real lesson, not a sales meeting. It runs the full sixty minutes, in the room where you would actually learn, with Vanessa, the teacher who would actually teach you. German is spoken from the first minutes, because that is how every lesson here begins, whether the learner is three years old or preparing for a Goethe exam.

For young children the hour is built around speaking, singing and moving, with very little writing. For teenagers and adults there is more reading, writing and grammar. What does not change is that everyone in the room talks. In-person groups never grow beyond four learners, so nobody sits quietly at the back for an hour.

Sometimes the trial takes place one to one, sometimes inside the group you would be joining. Both work well, and we tell you which it will be when we agree the time, so nothing on the day is a surprise.

How we find the right level

You take a lesson rather than a test. By the end of the hour we usually know which group fits. With children we keep watching through the first week or two in the group, because how a child actually keeps up in a real lesson says far more than a score on paper. If a group turns out not to be the right one, we say so and move the learner to the one that is.

The single exception is an adult working towards a Goethe exam with a deadline. There a short written check is worth the time, because it shows exactly how far you still are from A1, B1 or B2. Otherwise there is nothing to prepare and nothing to revise beforehand. You can read more about the levels and groups on our German classes page.

Booking your trial lesson

Send us a message on WhatsApp at +233 25 693 3270 or write to info@studyfreunde.com. Tell us who is learning, roughly what German they already have, and when you are free. We answer with one or two times that match the groups currently running.

Teaching hours are Tuesday to Friday from 12pm to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm, and lessons outside those hours are possible by agreement. We teach at 1 Alex Nkrumah Street in Airport West, Accra. Please arrange your visit with us first, so that a teacher is free when you arrive. Lessons are also taught online on request, so if you are outside Accra, mention it when you write.

Before you come

Please arrive 15 minutes before your lesson starts. You are welcome to wait in reception until the room is free. Lessons are 60 minutes and run back to back, so arriving a quarter of an hour early means the lesson can begin on time and the full hour is spent learning rather than settling in.

Bring nothing at all if this is your trial lesson. Books, worksheets and everything else are here. If you are an adult with an exam deadline, bring any certificates or course records you already have, so we can see exactly where you stand.

After your trial lesson

You decide afterwards, in your own time, and there is no pressure in either direction. If you join, you choose how often you come: one lesson a week, two or three. Books, worksheets and marked homework are included, there is no registration fee, and membership can be cancelled monthly. If you would rather meet us before booking a lesson at all, the Saturday German playgroup from 1pm to 2.30pm is an easy first step for children and teenagers from three to seventeen. Registration is needed, and it is free for Studyfreunde learners.
