Why start German early?
Many parents have the same worry. Here is what it usually sounds like, and what is really true.
MYTH 1: Two languages confuse children.
Children grow up with two or three languages all over the world, and Ghana is a good example. German and English sit side by side, without one getting in the way of the other. What helps is regular contact with each language.
MYTH 2: Children should master English first and start German later.
There is no need to wait. Children pick up both languages naturally at the same time, and an early start makes German much easier later on. Starting later still works, it simply takes more conscious effort.
MYTH 3: A bit of mixing means my child is struggling.
Mixing a few words between languages is completely normal. It is part of how young bilingual children find their way, not a sign of confusion. It usually sorts itself out as vocabulary grows in both languages.
How we group children for German for preschoolers in Accra
Children aged 3 to 5 learn in small groups of up to four, with children of a similar age. At this age we work through songs, games and movement rather than through worksheets, so a child who has never heard German and one who hears it at home can sit in the same circle. A 10% family discount applies from the second family member.

What you will learn
First German words and everyday vocabulary, with themes children already know: colours, numbers, body parts, family and animals. They listen, repeat and respond, and pick up the sound and rhythm of German through songs, movement and play.
What is included
Play-based learning materials, songs, games and creative activities, and visual resources children can touch and move. Progression is gentle and guided, at the pace of the group. Families can also borrow from our German library, which has picture books for the youngest ages.

How young can a child start?
From three. At this age German comes through songs, games, movement and picture books rather than worksheets, in a group of no more than four.
Does my child need to speak German already?
No. The group is for complete beginners as well as for bilingual children who already hear German at home.
How many lessons a week do you recommend at this age?
One lesson a week is enough to begin with, and many families choose two. On top of that, children are welcome at the Saturday Spielgruppe, where they hear German in play with other children. More than two lessons is rarely useful at this age, because young children learn best in short, regular doses.
What does it cost?
One lesson a week is GHS 1,200 a month and two lessons are GHS 2,200. The Saturday Spielgruppe is included for Studyfreunde learners, and siblings get 10 per cent off from the second child.
What if my child is shy or does not join in at first?
That is normal at this age. There is no test for young children. Vanessa watches how they take part in the first lessons and adjusts the group from there.
